From Space Station 14 Wiki

This is an unordered list of basic concepts/interactions people meet when starting to play this game. [Work in progress]

OOC

OOC stands for "out of character". You can think of OCC communication channels as something like the games discord. Dont try to gain an advantage by using this channel (for example using it to ask to be revived) as that would be cheating.

Climbing on furniture

Click and drag your character onto something climbable (say a table). A short progress bar will run and then you will be on the target. Moving cancels the progress bar. Do note that you have to be close enough for it to work and that the hitbox could be slightly awkward.

Using furniture

Much like climbing, click and drag your character onto a useable piece of furniture (say a chair) and your character will sit on it. You can also do this to other players if they stand still. You can also enter the disposal units this way.

Eating/Drinking

Eating or drinking doesn't work if you are wearing a helmet/mask. If you need to eat something, either go to the bar/cook or just use one of the many vending machines around the station (they are free though have a limited inventory).

Dropping/Throwing items

Pressing Q will drop the currently held item to where your cursor is (this is rebind-able in the settings). Ctrl+Q will throw the currently held item towards your cursor. There are a number of special interactions around throwing objects. For example:

  • Throwing bottles will break them.
  • You can throw items into disposal units.

Walking

Holding shift makes you walk. This stops you from tripping over from puddles, banana peels etc. There is the notable exception of lube puddles that still make you fall over.

Crowbarring Doors/Firelocks/Airlocks/...

The Crowbar can be used to manually open/close doors, so long as they dont resist and aren't bolted. Common use case is opening unpowered doors in case of an electricity failure or opening firelocks. Do note that some doors (like airlocks) might resist if the threat that triggered them is still active.

Sci/Sec/Med/...

These are simply shorthands for their respective departments/people. If someone wants to go to Med, they want to go to the medical department. If someone is Sec, they are an officer from the Security Department. So on and so forth.

Cuffs

People (usually security) might put cuffs on you. You will see this icon on your right hand bar:

While cuffed you cant really interact with stuff. Clicking on the icon will start removing the cuffs. Progress bar is visible to others and fails if you are moved. It is also quite slow. Other people can remove cuffs from you much quicker (keys not required).

Healing

If you are hurt, go and ask medical for help. This might seem weird to new players but departments in this game aren't just "vending machines". The doctor will likely ask how you got hurt so they can give you the right type of medicine. This isn't purely roleplay, there are different damage types. Also medicine effects aren't immediate.

Oxygen Tanks/Masks

To use oxygen tanks you need to be wearing some sort of mask in your mask slot. (For example "breath mask"). You also need to have an oxygen tank in your hands or your pocket slots. You can toggle breathing using the tank using the action bar on the left. (if you have both a mask equipped and are holding a tank, a key-bind will automatically show up on it). Oxygen canisters run out and can be refilled at oxygen canisters. Also, only "emergency" oxygen tank can go in your pocket slots (and have less capacity)

Looting

Click and drag someones body onto your character to start looting it. You can remove multiple pieces of clothing at once. When something is removed it will go in your active hand, or drop next to their body if you dont have space. The progress bar for removing an item is visible to everyone.

Pick-Pocketing

You can think of Pick-Pocketing like looting from living/conscious people. Works the same except that the other person might be a lot more interested in stopping you.
