Your main priority at the start of the round is to use the RD computer to research most (if not all) of the research available.

Does actually require research in order to make anything, items can vary from simple ammo to other machines. Requires steel, plastic and glass to craft. A recommendation is to create medical scanners and cloners and bring them over to medbay, to hasten up their work process, but also keeping a cloner to yourself, incase medbay gets bombed or vented (Trust me, it will in most games)
In most of maps the vault is located somewhere near bridge and you should already have access to it. If you don't have access, do not be afraid to ask the captain, Research Director or the HOP for the gold via the [[Radio]].

A scientists job is to produce machines and tools for fellow staff. When cargo / salvage / chemistry isn't doing their job, crew will visit you more frequently. [[Chemist|Chemists]] may request pill canisters and beakers. [[Security Officer|Security]] may prefer to visit you as they think you are less busy than the Chemists. A [[Janitor|Janitor]] may require more space cleaner or a mop. A zombie outbreak may require you to make [[Chemistry#chem_Romerol|Romerol]] grenades. Misc staff may desire power cells (batteries) or flashlights. Possibly you will get annoyed at the [[Engineer|engineers]] and create your own off-the-grid power supply. You may also get an [[Xenoarcheology|alien artifact]] to research.
